Altima Advantage Insurance Plans

Medical and Dental Insurance Benefits & Extended Coverage for Health and Dentistry Treatment

You insure your home, car and other valuables - why wouldn't you insure the most valuable thing you have: your health? Investing in your health is one of the best decisions you will ever make, both for you and your family.

Supplementary health insurance starts where government coverage ends. With no supplementary health coverage, you would normally have to pay out of your own pocket for regular expenses such as prescriptions, dental care, vision care, therapeutic services and more. If your partner doesn't have coverage at work, your out-of-pocket medical expenses can get even bigger, especially if you have children, dependants, or elderly parents that rely on you for support.

With the affordable coverage offered by The Altima Advantage Health and Dental Plan, you'll have one less thing to worry about, knowing that many of your medical expenses, both routine and unexpected, will be covered.

More choices to fit your needs and budget

Supplementary health insurance is not one size-fits-all. Each family may need more of one type of coverage and less of another. There are a variety of plans to choose from, whether you need prescription drug coverage, dental coverage, travel coverage, or a combination plan.

There are 8 different Altima Advantage Health and Dental Plans for you to choose from! Four plans offer various levels of both health and dental benefits, while the other four plans offer various levels of dental coverage.

Click on the Plan Comparisons PDF to review each plan and select the one that best suits you or your family's individual needs and budget. Complete the Online Application Form and email it to us for review, and your personal Altima Advantage Advisor will contact you - it's that easy!

What's in it for you?

All plans include core benefits
You don't have to pay extra premiums for benefits like vision care, registered specialists and therapists, ambulance services and more.

Your benefits start on the first day of the month following approval, with no waiting period for eligibility.

Fast, convenient claims submission
Your Benefit Card makes it easy for most prescription drug and dental claims to be electronically processed for you - so your money stays in your pocket!

Five travel insurance tips to help you!

How to know what the right travel coverage is....

So, here's our round-up of the five things you need to consider when buying travel insurance.

1. Medical coverage

This is probably the most important aspect of travel insurance.

When you leave Canada, even if it's only for a few hours, you are leaving behind up to 90% of your government health insurance plan (GHIP/AHCIP) coverage. Travelling without emergency medical travel insurance while outside of Canada can be an unexpected and costly expense as only a portion is covered by GHIP.

Health Canada recommends Canadian travellers purchase additional supplementary travel health insurance when travelling outside of their home province/territory, even if travelling within Canada as each Province differs in what they cover.

Medical costs outside of Canada can be very expensive. Medical bills can easily and quickly add up. For example, United States hospitals can charge over $5,000 per day for in-patient care.

2. Missed Flight Coverage and Baggage Loss

It's true that many travel insurance policies won't pay out if it appears you didn't leave yourself enough time to get to the airport. It may sound harsh but travel insurance is there to protect you for events you couldn't reasonably have avoided. So if you've slept-in and missed your flight as a result it's unlikely you'll get a payout.

It's 10 p.m. and you and your immediate family arrive at the airport for a connecting flight, only to find that your flight has been cancelled. Who can assist you with finding new flights to get everyone home?

It sounds obvious, but when you're choosing your policy check that the baggage cover is going to be suitable for everything you plan to take with you. Also, many policies will specify that you need to keep expensive items such as laptops and cameras in your hand luggage.

Your bag was lost with your insulin inside. You need help to locate your bag as soon as possible and have your emergency prescription filled. Who do you call?

So taking this type of coverage as an add-on would well be worth taking. (See Below)

3. Group Plans and Credit Card Coverage

Group plans often do not provide trip cancellation, trip interruption, or lost luggage coverage – and when these are provided, coverage limits often do not adequately cover your pre-paid trip costs.

Group plans usually provide coverage for a small portion of emergency medical expenses while travelling.

And you can't rely on your credit card(s):

Credit cards that offer travel insurance often come with age limitations to those who qualify for coverage, and usually do not provide coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, and lost luggage.

Limits on coverage and travel duration must be looked at closely as many credit cards will not adequately cover your trip investment.

4. Plan Types

If you are planning multiple trips within one year then you should consider annual, multi-trip travel benefits. You can use it as many times as you want within the year, and will save a considerable amount of money by purchasing this type of insurance.

Sometimes travel benefits are bundled in with your vacation deal. Before purchasing this insurance shop around and compare plans. You might save considerable money by opting out and getting cheaper travel insurance!

If you are not flying then make sure that you are not purchasing other add-ons such as baggage loss and trip cancellation. If you need this, it comes in different amounts and there also additional costs for laptops and more expensive items.

If you are going on vacation with your family then check out Family plans or Couple rates, which are usually cheaper than getting one plan per person.

5. Assistance Services - Provider

Travel insurance providers aren't expecting you to sit quietly in the hotel for the duration of your holiday so most will cover a certain number of activities as standard.

If you're injured playing on the beach, kicking a soccer ball around with the kids or on a bike ride around the town, then most policies will pay out.

Many will even cover things like bungee jumping as part of a basic policy.

However, as always, the key is to check the policy small print before you buy to ensure you'll be covered for any activities you've planned.

You want a travel insurance provider who gives you true 24/7 travel and emergency assistance services. Knowing you have help while travelling, if the unexpected happens, is invaluable and provides you with peace of mind.
